INRODUCTION-
Polystyrene (PS) is a synthetic aromatic polymer made from the monomer styrene. Polystyrene can be
solid or foamed.
Some
of the properties of polystyrene are as below.
·
clear, hard & brittle.
·
poor oxygen & water vapour
barrier
·
low melting point.
·
inexpensive.
·
naturally transparent but can be
colored.
APPLICATION-
PS
is a thermoplastic polymer & hence flows when heated above it’s glass
transition temperature of 100 °C and becomes rigid again on
cooling.this properties makes it possible to use PS for extrusion, molding
& vaccum forming, as it can be cast into molds with fine precision.
Some
of the uses of PS are as below.
·
protective packagings(DVD Cases).
·
Disposable cutlery, bottles.
·
Bi-axially oriented extruded crystal
polystyrenesheet servesapplication such as envelope winders & food
packaging application.
·
PS foam made from expandable
polystyrene beads & can be molded to produce hot drink cups, foam
packagings.
·
Polystyrenes also find their
application in furniture, packaging, automobiles, construction, and luggage.
TYPE OF TESTING-
·
Water Absorption test
·
Gravity-Driven Drop Test
·
FITR Test
·
Flammability test
·
Density test
·
Physical tests
