Introduction:
The
Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) is a very important advanced instrument used
for material characterization. TGA is used for materials testing/plastic
testing/ rubber testing / polymer testing needed in various environmental,
food, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical and polymer/plastic / rubber /
composite applications. Thermogravimetric
analysis or Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) can help us in determining the moisture content/Volatiles, inorganic, organic components, additives,
decomposition points and degradation temperatures. In TGA analysis of plastics/rubber/polymer/any
material, mass loss with respect to the temperature is measured with an advance
inbuilt thermobalance which can go as high as up to 1100C.
Working/Principle:
ThermogravimetricAnalysis / TGA Analysis is a technique wherein the mass loss of a material is
measured as a function of temperature or time. During TGA testing the sample
specimen is subjected to a controlled temperature program in a controlled
atmosphere either in Nitrogen or Oxygen or Air.
A TGA
mainly comprises of a sample pan that is held on by an ultra precision thermo balance.
That pan is surrounded in a furnace and is heated or cooled during the
experiment. The mass of the sample is measured during the testing. A sample
purge gas controls the sample environment. This gas may be inert or a reactive
gas that flows over the sample and exits through an exhaust. During TGA testing
of Plastics/rubber/polymer/composites, Chemical reactions, such
as combustion, involve mass losses, whereas physical changes, such as melting,
do not. The sample mass loss is plotted against temperature or time axis
to present the thermal transitions in the plastics Plastics/rubber/polymer/composites – such as Volatile loss, Moisture loss, polymer burning loss and finally,
decomposition of the material.
1.2 Application:
Typical TGA on Plastics/rubber/polymer/composites applications include:
§ Filler content of polymer resins
§ Volatile
Organic Content (VOCs)
§ Carbon black content
§ Decomposition temperature
§ Moisture content
§ Plasticizer content in polymers
§ Oxidative stability
§ Performance of stabilizers
§ Low molecular weight monomers in polymers
